Double E Group announces with profound sadness the passing of its founder, Richard Edward “Ed” Flagg, on June 23, 2025. He was 85.
A lifelong innovator and entrepreneur, Ed Flagg founded the original Double E Company in 1972 after a moment of insight while fishing in Plymouth Harbor. That vision led to the invention of the first torque-activated core chuck—an engineering breakthrough that revolutionized core handling in the paper and converting industries.
Under his leadership, Ed transformed a small New England startup into a global leader in critical web handling components. His ideas and persistence redefined safety, reliability, and performance for countless converters worldwide. He held a fierce belief in quality, and a sharper instinct for solving problems that others couldn’t see.
“Ed wasn’t just a businessman. He was an inventor in the truest sense—a man who turned intuition into industry,” said longtime employee Mark Mayo, Double E Group’s Director of North American Sales. “He built this company the way he lived his life: hands-on, all-in, and always with a sense of purpose.”
Beyond his professional legacy, Ed was a man deeply rooted in family, nature, and faith. His character shaped the culture of the company from its earliest days and continues to inspire its people today.
Ed’s vision lives on in the company he founded, the innovations he pioneered, and the lives he touched. Double E Group remains committed to honoring his legacy by continuing to lead with the same spirit of innovation, ingenuity and the integrity he embodied.
